Tom is a former foreign correspondent with more than 12 years’ experience in news, campaigning, and communications strategy. During six years as a journalist, he reported and produced on the ground from Syria, Egypt and Libya for outlets including Reuters, the Guardian, the Independent, VICE News and Africa Confidential.
He has campaigned on international affairs for Crisis Action and domestic British ones for the Communication Workers’ Union, and has produced multimedia campaign material for Human Rights Watch and Equality Now. During a period as a conflict analyst focusing on Yemen, he provided briefings relied on by humanitarian organisations operating there, and gained experience working with large open data sets.
He enjoys long-form writing, improving his (persistently intermediate) Arabic, and is comfortable working overseas. Tom has a 2.1 from the University of Oxford in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.
